March - Practical Gardening Tips

As the month advances so does the tide of green that sweeps over the garden. Every day there are new buds, shoots and delicate blooms to admire (as well as weeds). For gardeners too, the sap is rising as the urge to get outside and do things becomes irresistible.

  • Clean out water butts
  • Prune roses and cut back lavatera, buddleia, forsythia and winter-flowering jasmine to within 15cm of the ground to keep shrubs compact
  • Plant snowdrops and aconites “in the green”
  • Sow hardy annuals
  • Plant maincrop potatoes
  • Sow tomatoes under cover, early salads in cold frames and plant onion and garlic sets
  • Divide large clumps of perennial plants, discarding the centres
  • Trim box plants and hedges
